We are beginning to discover the power and potential of innovative technology for good.
We are seeing the rise of companies developing tech to enhance, enrich and inspire the lives of others. It is an exciting time with global brands like Facebook and Google leading the forefront of innovative technology for good causes and lasting social impact. This week we take a look at the tech that has inspired us and helps drive us in our mission of developing innovative technology for good.
How are we using technology for good?
There has been a surge of companies striving to develop innovative technology to tackle some of the world’s biggest issues. It is an exciting time where digital leaders and thinkers are using technology to save lives, improve our environment and promote social change.
Innovative tech is helping save lives, especially with the rise of wearable tech. The Fitbit was initially developed to improve health and well being, however the technology has the potential to help save lives as well. Medical professionals have the ability now to use heart rate data recorded by Fitbit to more accurately establish a diagnosis. 3D Printing is an extremely valuable development, with the ability to create three dimensional objects from digital files. It is also helping shape the future of medical technology with low cost prosthetics, synthetic skin and even kidney cells.
With the rise of technology in medicine, developers are also tackling wider, environmental issues with the use of innovative tech. Surveillance technology such as Drones are being used to help protect and improve the environment by providing high-res images that help to protect wildlife from poachers and collect a substantial amount of data to help conservation methods. We are now also capable of detecting pollution with innovative tech, from which we can determine a cause and prevent future health risks from pollution.
There is a vast amount of tech being developed for medicine and the environment, however companies are also looking at how technology can help inspire social change. Perhaps the greatest impact we have had from tech is the rise of the internet and connecting with others digitally - social media, smart phones, apps. Raising awareness of social issues is becoming easier with the ability to access a wealth of information online and by sharing information with the billions of people connected online either through social media, email, blogs… We see crowdsourcing as an accessible and straightforward way to raise funds for good causes as well as raise awareness of issues. Technology is even being used to tackle extremely sensitive issues such as suicide with the development of tools for detection and prevention.
Why is innovative technology for good important for charities and non-profits?
Charities and non-profits now have a vast amount of methods for fundraising and we are beginning to see a large shift toward the digital space, especially within the charity sector. You have all seen charities using social media to raise awareness and promote charitable giving with campaigns like #nomakeupselfie, Movember and of course the Ice Bucket Challenge (which raised over $115 Million to fund ALS research).
However, with the rise of charities and good causes promoting material on social media, blogs and websites, there is now a need for charities to be more creative with their campaigns in the competition to stand out. Nonetheless, technology is making it possible for charities and good causes to reach millions of people online affordably.
