A local authority lottery is a brilliant method of raising funds for your local good causes and charities.
A lottery is an innovative and sustainable way to continue to support your local community that will benefit good causes and local community groups. Local authorities are beginning to see the power of running online community lotteries due to large number of individuals that can be reached through social media, email marketing and any other online marketing activities. A central community lottery is extremely valuable in terms of raising awareness of good causes and by providing a weekly opportunity for continued player engagement. It is a brand new way of fundraising and takes your current fundraising methods into the digital sphere.
Local Authority Licence
Local authorities may run 'local authority lotteries' to raise funds to cover anything for which they have the power to incur expenditure. All local authority lotteries must be licensed by the gambling commission and may employ an External Lottery Manager to run all or part of the lottery. For more information please visit The Gambling Commission.
Capen are licensed External Lottery Managers and will be able to assist you in your journey towards your community lottery.
How does a local authority lottery help the community?
Running a local authority lottery or community lottery, good causes and charities are spared the administration costs and responsibilities that come with running a lottery. By freeing them of valuable time, good causes are able to focus on development and money raised by the community lottery will go back to the charity.
By running an online lottery, charities and good causes who sign up to the community lottery will be able to engage with others through social media and any other online methods. This enables charities and community lotteries to raise awareness and start important conversations online.
What does a local authority lottery look like?
A weekly lottery that is £1 per ticket with a top prize of £25,000. For every winner of the top prize of £25,000 an extra £25,000 will go to the charity or good cause the player chooses to support. At least 50p of every £1 ticket will go straight to the charity or good cause and a further 18p goes to a central community fund that will be distributed to local good causes by the council. The remaining 32p of every £1 ticket will go to the costs of running the lottery including the prize fund.
One of the central features of this model is that for any £25,000 winner, an extra £25,000 also goes to the charity the winner chooses to support. It is a fantastic incentive that benefits both players and good causes.
